Local SEO for service businesses: how to rank in your city

The realistic playbook for showing up when nearby customers search — on-page, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, citations, and reviews.

Local ranking is three things working together

Ranking for "[service] in [city]" comes down to relevance, distance, and prominence. You influence relevance with on-page content and structured data, distance with clear service-area targeting, and prominence with reviews, citations, and links. No single tactic wins; the combination does.

Get the on-page foundation right

Before chasing links, make each page unambiguous about what you do and where.

  • One clear H1 with the service and city in it.
  • A title tag under ~60 characters, service and city first.
  • Genuinely local content — not a city-name swap — plus LocalBusiness structured data.
  • Fast, mobile-first pages so the local pack and organic results both reward you.

Claim Google Business Profile and Bing Places

The local pack (the map results) is often the first thing a searcher sees. A complete, consistent Google Business Profile — and its overlooked twin, Bing Places — is the entry ticket. Keep your name, address, and phone identical everywhere; inconsistency quietly suppresses local ranking.

Bing also powers DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, and Copilot/ChatGPT answers, so claiming Bing Places is a cheap way to show up where competitors have not bothered.

Reviews and citations build prominence

A steady stream of recent, genuine reviews is one of the strongest local signals — and it converts. Build review requests into your follow-up so asking is automatic, not an afterthought. Then keep your business listed consistently across the directories that matter in your country.

Set realistic expectations

Local SEO compounds over weeks and months, not days. Long-tail and specific-city terms come first; competitive head terms come as your authority grows. The right move is to build the system that competes, then measure and iterate.
